Worked examples

Back from a 30-minute lunch

A lunch that starts at 12:15 PM and lasts 30 minutes returns a result of 12:45 PM.

Eight paid hours with lunch

Starting at 7:00 AM with eight paid hours and a 30-minute unpaid lunch returns a 3:30 PM clock-out time.

How lunch deductions affect worked hours

For completed-shift mode, the calculator accounts for the unpaid break separately from the full clock-in to clock-out span and reports the paid-time result. Paid breaks should not be entered as unpaid time.

Overnight shifts

If clock-out is earlier than clock-in, the calculator recognizes the shift as crossing midnight so night-shift users do not need to adjust the date manually.

Accuracy and edge-case validation

Checks cover lunch return times, completed shifts, requested clock-out times, overnight spans, zero-duration breaks, invalid ranges, and boundary values before updates are published.

Paid and unpaid breaks are not interchangeable

Only enter time that should be excluded from paid hours as an unpaid break. Use the actual start and end records when a meal period was shortened, interrupted, skipped, or crossed midnight, and check the result against the policy or rule that applies to the shift.

A planned lunch length is not always the same as the recorded break. When reconciling a completed shift, use the actual break record and flag any missing or disputed punch instead of silently replacing it with the schedule.

For a return-time question, confirm whether the stated duration begins at the recorded lunch-out time. A grace period, paid rest break, or automatic deduction is a separate policy question.
